"Early Abortion"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Gynaecology Lincoln County Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

Unfortunately I recently went through the abortion process after my husbands vasectomy failing. It was an extremely difficult decision, the hardest I've ever had to make. I had to go in to the hospital for the first tablet on one day and then return 2 days later for the passing of the pregnacy.

I was absolutely heartbroken and extremely scared at the thought I had to go through the process without my husband by my side but after being reassured on the first appointment that the nurses would be there in place of my husband to support me all the way through it, I went ahead. They told me all the way through they would keep me updated and let me know when the pregnancy had passed and make sure I wasnt in pain.

After arriving at the hospital to begin the 2nd and final part of the process and taking the medication, the next visit I had from a nurse was over 4hrs later after asking for pain relief which I was then given paracetamol. The person coming in and out was a healthcare assistant who was emptying the commode and I actually asked her if a nurse could come and see me and let me know if I have passed the pregnancy and what's going on for her to tell me I had passed it and waiting to monitor blood loss but even after that, no nurse appeared. The next time I saw a nurse was on discharge. No support, very traumatic time in my life and very lonely experience.

Dear lonelygirl

I am saddened to hear that when attending the ward you felt scared and unsupported by the team. This is not our usual practice as we would usually provide excellent support to our patients and their partners. We are aware how difficult and emotive this time can be for our ladies which is unfortunately increased during COVID when we are unable to accommodate your partner to support you. I apologise that we did not offer you the level of support you needed. I will discuss this with our nursing team, so that we can use your feedback to improve our care to ladies in a similar position. If you would like to contact me to discuss this further I would welcome your call, and want to assure you that we will ensure that the team is aware of how vital it is to keep you updated, supported and reassured during this difficult time. My contact number is 01522 573132.

I wish to offer my sincere apologies for the distress this may has caused to you.

Kindest regards

Karen Bird
