I have had congenital heart block since birth but had required no treatment until my late 30s when I developed some symptoms. I was given a really thorough examination by the cardiology department and a pacemaker was deemed the best course of action. I was issued an appointment for surgery within the next 4 weeks and was given very useful leaflets and booklets which answered all my questions as well as a pre appointment with a nurse who answered the rest. At first I was nervous as I am younger than most people who require a pacemaker but with the support of the medical staff I ended up just feeling really grateful to the NHS for providing the treatment I needed. A very special thank you to Dr Carrick in Cardiology and to Dr Weir, Tracy, Annette and Eric in the Cath lab.
