My daughter is currently on the post surgery ward. Last night, a nurse took a blood sample from the tube containing her TPN (liquid food) which is pumped directly into a tube which goes into a main artery, bypassing her bowel. Because the blood sample was diluted with the liquid in the tube, the results showed that she needed a blood transfusion. A doctor came in to see her first thing this morning asking if she had any idea why her blood count had dropped so much. My daughter explained that the nurse had used the feeding tube to take the blood. She told her not to use that tube because she knows it shouldn't be used for that purpose and it can only be touched under extreme sterile conditions but the nurse over ruled her and said it would be fine. Thank god my daughter is able to speak for herself otherwise she'd be having an unnecessary blood transfusion now.
"Very worrying practice"
