"No protective equipment"

About: West Scotland Breast Screening Centre

(as a service user),

I attended breast screening in Glasgow at the Centre, Nelson Mandela Place.

Staff were wearing no protective equipment in circumstances where the contact could not have been closer. I believe that this practice is not right, and may be placing staff and patients at great risk. In the circumstances presented by Covid-19, if staff cannot be provided with the appropriate equipment, I think screening centres should close.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback with us.

I have spoken with my colleagues in public health and in the screening service about your concerns.

I’d like to reassure you that all of our staff, including the breast screening service are closely following the national guidelines about personal protective equipment.

As you may know, the national guidance is changing regularly as we get new developments. Based on recent guidance the West of Scotland Breast Screening Service took the decision to pause all screening appointments from Monday 23rd March until further notice, to ensure the safety of all patients and staff. It was not a decision that was taken lightly but deemed necessary to prevent clients having to travel to non-urgent appointments and to allow staff to be deployed to support other areas as the need arises.

Prior this, the service had implemented more stringent cleaning to help ensure the safety of patients and staff. They had also posted notices around clinical areas, including mobile units, asking patients to self-isolate and not attend their appointment if they were showing symptoms.

I understand it is a very worrying time for everyone and I hope this helps to put you at ease. Thank you again for sharing your feedback with us.

Best wishes,

Rachel
