A big thank you to everyone - the national bowel screening service and the endoscopy team at BGH. A routine poo test showed a trace of blood and an assessment phone call from Gayle at BGH gave me lots of useful information. This was followed up by comprehensive (and readable) written information. The bowel prep was foul tasting, and the advice not to go far from a toilet well justified. The colonoscopy itself was done on a weekend at BGH, by a team from Glasgow. It wasn't much fun, but the team were amazing. Everything was explained before and during the procedure, and the care and reassurance from the whole team was wonderful. I felt very safe in the hands of true professionals. A polyp was skilfully removed - I'm awaiting lab results, hopefully its benign. I feel very grateful to live in a country which offers its citizens this level and quality of service free at the point of delivery. I don't think I was the most straightforward patient to deal with (although that's just my opinion - the team gave me no cause to think that). I feel strongly that NHS managers should attend clinics as part of their ongoing education, so that they can gain some insight into the challenges that clinicians deal with regularly.
