"I always felt safe, even when the worst happened."

About: Golden Jubilee National Hospital Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Cardiology Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Critical Care (includes HDU & ITU) Inverclyde Royal Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I was admitted to IRH at the end of last year for an emergency appendectomy. Mr Hannay did my surgery and his whole team were amazing. I have a heart condition which meant I was not put on a ward but in HDU where I could be monitored closely. I stayed on HDU for a few more days until I took very unwell and was moved to ICU and put on a ventilator. My family were told they may lose me.

But I survived, I was transferred to Golden Jubilee as with all the infection etc I now had heart failure. I wanted to thank the whole HDU staff and ICU especially Mr Hannay, Dr Staber, Dr Husain my cardiologist and Sarah-Anne my device nurse and every single nurse that looked after me. I always felt safe, even when the worst happened and I really was scared with my breathing, they were there holding my hand and getting me through it. I'll never be able to repay the staff for saving my life.

I also want to thank all the nurses on behalf of my family, I had a busy relatives room the night I was put on ventilator and everyone was patient and understanding with them all. Thank you all for everything. I'm sorry I cannot name you all but special shout out to Kelly-Anne, Anne, Nicola and Nicola. Thank you for going above and beyond with me. I still have care at IRH with Sheila, my heart failure nurse, and attend a clinic at Jubilee too. I was very well looked after.

Hello HF girl

Many thanks for your post on Care Opinion and sharing your story especially after such a difficult time for you and your family.

Your story has been shared with the doctors and nurses who cared for you during your time in HDU and ICU in the IRH. Myself and the team are pleased to hear you are recovering well and hope you continue to do so.

It was especially good to hear that you 'always felt safe'. The nurses and doctors who work within critical care are very aware that requiring critical care is a very anxious and frightening time for patients and their families. Your comments are most reassuring for me and the team that you and your family felt the benefit of those caring conversations and behaviours.

Thank you again HF girl

Linda

Thank you for passing this on. I appreciate it as I want them to know how invaluable they are and amazing their work ethic is. I was very well looked after, and also the staff at the Jubilee were just as amazing.
