"The patience of angels"

About: Lothian Community Services / Speech and Language Therapy

(as a service user),

The speech therapist comes in for my wife once a week, and I have to say the staff are very very good. They have the patience of angels. The care is very good.

And if I had to say what could be improved, I'd say they don't have enough speech therapists. The therapists themselves are great and I know they don't have enough staff to provide for it but if she had more than one session a week it would be much better.

My wife understands the support and therapy each week, but by the next week she has forgotten most of it. She has other health issues which effect her mobility so she doesn't interact with enough other people to keep up her language, so it's up to the speech therapists.

After her last stroke, she had 8 weeks of therapy but it wasn't enough so they gave her 8 more, and this time the doctors say it is worse.

I know it can't be helped as the team run services a big area and there's not enough therapists to have more sessions, but once a week is not enough.

Otherwise, the care is great, they work with her so well and they have the patience of angel, especially when it comes to my wife.

Hello! Sorry for the delay in responding. Thank you very much for taking the time to post about the Speech and Language Therapy service. The team are always very happy to get feedback.

We have been looking into the possibility of offering more frequent interventions for some patients but, as you said, it is difficult to balance requests/need and our resources.

Best wishes

Lucie
