"Told I need help but can't have it"

About: Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Adult Mental Health Services - Community (County)

(as the patient),

Having been seen at Hope, Dovecote Centre in Beeston, I have been advised that I would require psychotherapy. There is an 18 month waiting list that they don't add people too so if I want help then private would be the only way. I don't have the resources for this. To be told you need help but you cant have it is soul destroying. A delicate headspace has shattered. Why do they continue to see new patients if they know that they are not willing or able to follow up after? Should I crack then the build up of Hope (apt) that I felt after the session to the dejection after the call will be very much a contributing factor.

Hello, my name is Jane Danforth. My role involves helping our service users, volunteers and staff to understand that Notts Healthcare wants to hear stories about our services. We reply to every story and it really helps us to improve what we do, how we do it and to hear about what works well too.

Dear jcdad

I am sorry for this extremely belated response and thank you for posting about this experience. I am also sorry to hear how you felt after being seen my the team at the Hope Centre. Accessing psychological therapies without long waiting times, as you have experienced, is a huge national issue and as is frequently the case, it isn’t about a lack of desire to want to offer people services it is about lack of resources and funding. However, the team at the Hope Centre are highly skilled at offering a range of psychological interventions which look to support people to better manage their day to day mental health. This can be offered whilst waiting for Psychotherapy. You may well find that this work lays the ground work and prepares you for more in depth analysis should you feel this is still required or something you wish to pursue. I hope the service you will receive from the team restores your hope and leads to the personal growth you wish to achieve.

If you wish to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact me on 0115 9691300 or via email: sarah.toone@nottshc.nhs.uk

Wishing you all the best for the future

Sarah

Hi jcdad

It really is a difficult time for many and a time of uncertainty. But, we are also trying to make this a time to think creatively and catch up with the 21st century in terms of how we use technology to deliver our services, particularly at the moment where face to face interactions are so limited. I hope it will not be too long before we are able to reach out to you and start working together.

In the interim, please do not hesitate to contact the team if you need support or advice. There are also many online resources that you may find helpful; I have copied a link of an example of one such resource that particularly focusses on how we can mange our mental health during the pandemic.

I hope you find it helpful but please do not hesitate to contact the team for other resources that may be useful.

All the very best
