When my husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer I could feel my world collapsing and closing in on me. Kylbride Hospice was near hand and I had passed many a time ,from the outside the hospice looked a calming and relaxing place for patients with terminal illness.
I discussed the hospice with my husband sharing my thoughts. My Husband did not want to discuss the hospice . ( he felt the word hospice described a very dark place) .I discovered from MacMillan that I could be referred as a carer for my husband .I have meet some amazing people. My first experience was with the Day Service team who were empathic and understanding and informed of the support that I could get from Kylbride Hospice. My experience has been fantastic journey.I joined the carer programme with other adults with similar stories and the same fears. In a pleasant and relaxed environment where we all enjoyed the tea coffee and biscuits whilst sharing our thoughts worries and needs. We received excellent advise from the team in relation to care in the community, social work support available , medication and the importance of how and when to administer ,signs to look for and explanation on the medication available , Solicitors visited providing information. on wills power of attorney and lots more relevant information.Complementary therapy I have received has been amazing. The need to care and take care of ourselves to enable me to care for my husband and lots more.Kylbride Hospice is not a dark place it is bright refreshing supportive environment providing excellent service to it patients and carers . The hospice has numerous activities going on to help patients and families.
I have managed to change my Husbands view on the word hospice and my aim is for him to visit and see for himself the fantastic place and meet the excellent staff at Kylbride Hospice.
I can not thank the team enough for giving up their time to support me and the group every week . ( Stephen Val Sine and Volunteer Mary )
The group will now continue to chat via social media or meet up for a coffee as strangers have now become friends.
"My fantastic experience"
