"GP letter charges"

About: General practices in Tayside Ninewells Hospital / Neurology

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was diagnosed with epilepsy a few months ago and is still not settled on a treatment. As a result she is still struggling and feeling quite unwell. She is in 1st year at university and they agreed to grant an extension for submission of some work if she could provide a letter from her Gp or the hospital. Her appt. at Ninewells this week was cancelled and postponed until July so we went to her GP. He liaised with neurology and new treatment has been agreed. Excellent service from them!

I do however have one issue and that is that my daughter is being charged £20 for the letter she needs for university. Had neurology had sufficient staff she would have had her treatment sorted months ago and it would not have been required. It seems extremely unfair that a student with no income and who is unable to work has to pay for this little bit of help.
