"First ever operation"

I have just recently been into hospital for my first ever operation. The care I received was incredible throughout. 

I visited my GP in the morning and I was admitted immediately to the hospital. Within no time I had a surgeon consult and was told I would be scheduled for surgery later in the same day. 

Obviously I felt scared, nervous and anxious about surgery. It was only 24 hrs prior I was playing football! And now I was being explained to what would happen in the next few hours, but a couple of nurses were reassuring and just wanted to know about me. This not only took my mind off things but helped relax me for this serious surgery. Prior to going under the surgeons came out, shook my hand and I felt they wanted to get to know me. It's a very simple thing to do but it made the difference. A few minutes later I was out and was undergoing surgery. 

I returned to my side room some time later. I was dazed, confused, scared and in pain. The night time nurse, I can't remember his name, was fantastic. He helped type a text to family and friends to let them know I was ok. He had a joke with me and he kept things simple. He even checked in with me before he left after his shift. 

I was out of hospital later the following day, 12 hours after surgery, to recover at home where I do so today 

I feel our nhs staff are under appreciated, under paid and perform a service that goes above and beyond. I am so thankful for them
