My dad has attended haematology outpatients for several years for a monthly infusion for his condition. He has always been well looked after. Yesterday he did not attend and I did not know. I was contacted by a nurse from the department who was making a welfare check as it was unusual for him to DNA and she had tried to ring him but got not reply. I left work and found my dad at home in a very poorly state- too poorly to contact me or alert anyone. We were very quickly being blue lighted to A and E and spent several hours in resus whilst he was stabilised following a diagnosis of pneumonia/sepsis. It was a close shave for him and the outcome could have been very different given his health problems . The phone call of concern from the haematology nurse probably saved his life as I wasn’t going to be in contact with my dad that day- given he was going out to the pub to watch the Leeds match!!! The nurse didn’t have to make that call but she did, it was the extra mile and showed genuine concern for which we can only be forever grateful. Thank you haematology outpatients- genuine life savers.
