"Podiatry services"

About: Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Podiatry

(as a service user),

Both myself and my wife (both in our 70's) need the use of the podiatry service's. My wife has had almost two hip replacements and I have osteoporosis, psoriasis and both of us due to illnesses cannot reach our own feet.

We were assessed on a home visit but deemed that we were not 'needy' enough of the free service and so we have to pay privately out of my pension that I have worked hard for over the years.

We were not given a list of approved podiatrists - where is the protection for us, what happened to the NHS's promise of the treatment at the point of need.

Thank you for getting in touch about your recent podiatry assessment, I'm sorry you feel unhappy about the outcome. Our assessment uses a set of criteria which determines clinical need for podiatry care. If you have not been accepted into the service this means that you don’t have any serious foot health problems that require clinical support or have other medical conditions that causes your feet to be at risk of further complications. Not being able to reach your feet does not qualify for podiatry care.

We do signpost people to support available in the area and I am sorry if this information was not given to you. There are a number of local independent podiatry and chiropody clinics however we can’t recommend individual practitioners but do suggest you check they are Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered. You can check www.hcpc-uk.org to find out if someone is listed.

AgeUK Calderdale and Kirklees have a high quality, professional nail cutting service which includes advice on how to improve and maintain general foot hygiene and a reassuring check to deal with any potential foot care problems you may have. The cost is £15 per session with an additional one-off cost of £10 on your first session for equipment. Clinics are available in various community locations around Kirklees and home visits are also available please call AgeUK on 01484 535 994 to find out more or visit the AgeUK website: www.ageuk.org.uk/calderdaleandkirklees/our-services/foot-care-service/.

Huddersfield University Podiatry Department run a Nail Clinic which costs around £12 per session. Tel: 01484 472201.

I hope this information is useful.

Best wishes

Sarah
