"Appalled at communication and transparency"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Gastroenterology (Stomach and Gut) General Practices in Grampian

(as a service user),

I recently received an apology from my GP after an issue was discovered with a practice receptionist telling me about test results.

The issue was that results from ARI tests weren't shared with me so despite being told on the telephone that I had a serious problem neither the hospital nor the practice would share the results.   The hospital had given results to the GP Practice but they repeatedly told me to contact the hospital.

Ive had to repeatedly visit my GP practice about my pain, nausea and vomiting and despite GP practice saying they'd made a referral I only got an appointment after commenting on this web site.

Now, however, I've also been asked to attend for a medical procedure by a completely different department and neither the hospital nor GP Practice can tell me why.   When I asked the GP practice about this and reported to them my inability to eat at all the GP practice left a message for me to attend the referral appointment 6 weeks away.

Ive also noticed increasingly raised blood pressure, now at 190/100 which has been logged to the GP s practice and not once have they suggested that it needs reviewed.     I am trying to take responsibility for my own health but if I report a new issue like hypertension continually getting worse,   and the inability to eat to my GP practice and their only response is to wait 6 weeks to be seen then I have serious doubt about how much they actually care for their patients.

Dear Huatulco,

Thanks for sharing your story through Care Opinion.

I’m sorry to hear that you have been left feeling ignored by the health services you have been in contact with but glad the GP practice has given an apology about the issue relating to your test results.

I can see from your previous post that Fiona Robertson has been in touch with and you and arranged for a consultant to contact you directly. I completely agree it shouldn’t have to take getting in touch via Care Opinion for that to happen and again apologise for this and the upset it must have caused you. Poor communication is incredibly frustrating at any time but especially when we are worried about our health.

Most GP Practices in Grampian are independently run and so are responsible for investigating and responding to any concerns that arise about the care and services they provide. I would be happy to help share your experience with the practice manager if you would like to contact me with details of which practice you visited? You can do so by emailing: kirsten.dickson@nhs.net or by telephone: 01224 558404.

Take care,

Kirsten

Hi Huatulco,

I think I received a telephone message from you today asking me to get back in touch. I seem to have written your number down wrongly as I can't get through. I wondered if you would mind trying trying to call again - or emailing? I'm at my desk today (Tuesday) until 5.30 and again tomorow from 9.30 -5.30.

Thank you,

Kirsten
