About: General practices in Ayrshire & Arran

(as a service user),

after receiving treatment for? Chest infection, and around 4 weeks treatment with antibiotics and steroids, which was initially blamed on inhalation of fumes,   I became unwell and was rushed to hospital by paramedics and it became apparent I was suffering from dangerously  low blood oxygen levels which required emergency treatment.

There is a question mark over mild COPD, however this has not been formally diagnosed.   I have had 2 xrays which have shown mild scarring on left side and an enlarged heart.   I suffer from morning fluid retention, stiffness and chronic pain.

I feel my GP has been very flippant about this and despite my inability to be as mobile as I was previously, GP has advised me that I should return to work.   As believe my GP has not looked at my xrays yet told me that I should be thankful it's not cancer.  I felt the GP attitude towards me was rude and uncaring.   I advised the GP that I experience tingling/ pains and needles in the top of both arms to which the GP responded dont worry about that but phone 999 if it worsens.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Mrs Bucket,

I am so sorry that you have been so unwell. I suspect you must have been pretty breathless and this is a horrible and scary thing to experience. I am also sorry you felt the GP was 'rude and uncaring', this is not what we need and expect when we are unwell and (to be honest) vulnerable.

I understand your annoyance in light of the fact you required emergency treatment for the condition. There are a couple of things you could do if you would like to go further with this.

Your GP practice has a complaints process and the practice manager would be your contact. Alternatively, if you would like me to pass this Care Opinion post for the practice to reflect on, please email me your name, date of birth and address and GP practice name. My email address is eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk.

I hope you are well on your way to a full recovery now.

Best wishes,

Eunice

p.s. For clarity, I hope this may be useful information about X-Rays in general.

As I understand it, GPs do not have access see X-Rays, but they can and should read the report by the Radiologist or Radiographer when it is available on their system.
