I was asked to go in for a Saturday day surgery to have my tonsils removed after being offered a space on the cancellation list. I rescheduled my work and arranged for my parents to do the same to look after my son so I would be able to rest and recover. At the pre-assessment I was told I would not able to have surgery on the Saturday as my BMI was too high and there are less staff on at the weekend and I would be more likely to have a complication.
I ended up on the phone to a medical secretary for ENT who was really nice to me and could tell I was really distressed at bring offered a slot that I would not be able to take. As an individual that has suffered from an Eating Disorder I was really upset and felt when I was offered the appointment they should have checked whether there was any criteria that would prevent me from being taken in. She said to leave it with her, and called me the next day to say they would be able to fit me in on Monday. As my work is allocated cases and not easy to take time off of I was really grateful she could fit me in.
The day surgery ward could not have been nicer, everyone was really attentive and friendly, really helpful and answered any questions I had. I ended up from having a really stressful and anxious time turned around by all the great staff and I want to say thank you to all at the day surgery unit and the secretary that squeezed me in. It's made a huge difference to my life already as I usually get constantly ill this time of year, and it means I'm off my work less and my job is helping others so I really have benefited from getting them out.
