"Sent my child home ......"

About: General practices in Fife

(as a parent/guardian),

Twice now my small child has been to our local GP service and seen by a practise nurse. My child had been sent home saying it’s just a virus when he had pneumonia and only recently another chest infection. It’s taken me nhs24 calls and a trip in an ambulance and out of hours appointments  before my son got the right care and put on antibiotics.

Both times the nurse from gp practice had told me it’s just noise from his throat and winter bugs. I felt I was shown no understanding and compassion for my concerns and feel I was given no advice on managing symptoms or when to have cause for concern. I was told only bring back if not better! I have had several visits to the gp over the last few weeks until the only way I know my child would get the right care is to visit the hospital.
My child’s symptoms ranged from high temp, not eaten in over a week, in total two weeks and a chesty cough that clearly sounded unhealthy as well as working the chest cavity harder. It’s taken for my child to become very sick before getting medicine.

Dear another worried parent

I was sorry to read about your recent experience at your GP surgery. It is disappointing to hear that you didn’t feel you were shown any compassion or understanding and that you did not feel your were given advice about when to be concerned for your child and bring them back for review.

As each GP practice is managed independently I would encourage you to raise your concerns directly with the practice manager.

If you have any difficulty please contact the Patient Relations Team patientrelations.fife@nhs.net who will be able to seek further advice on your behalf.

Kind regards

Dr Helen Hellewell
