"Delay to treatment due to dire communication"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 21-23)

(as the patient),

Ruptured Achilles tendon. Went to A&E 5 weeks later - friendly & speedy treatment there and temporary plaster cast fitted.  Was advised my long-term treatment plan would be decided after an MRI, which would be requested urgently.  I could expect to be telephoned 'in a few days'. I called the fracture clinic 5 days later to enquire about the appointment and was told there was nothing on file.  I asked again the following day, when I attended to get the plaster cast replaced, and was again told there was no record. Four days after that, I received a letter stating that I had failed to attend the appointment which had been made for me (on the day after I'd been at the clinic!) at another hospital.  I had had no letter or phone call.

I called that hospital's number where the friendly staff member found my records and told me that the appointment had been requested the day after my A&E visit; the appointments department had telephoned the original hospital , spoken to a member of staff, told them of my appointment and was told that they would let me know immediately!,

Dear Krikles,

Thank you very much for taking the time to let us know about your experience. I am sorry that your experience in dealing with the fracture clinic was not a positive one. This falls short of the standard I would expect from my dept. Can I ask that you contact me directly either by telephone on 0141 314 6789 or by email at linda.blair2@ggc.scot.nhs.uk, with your details so as I can look into this.

Dear Krikles,

Thank you for taking the time to contact me on Sunday. After some investigation work and our telephone call on Tuesday afternoon, I have passed on your details to the Trauma Team and a member of their staff will be in touch with you.

I wish you well on your recovery.

Linda
