"Highly unpleasant experience"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

I visited the audiology and ENT department following a referral from my GP who was concerned about the onset of tinnitus and that I might still be experiencing symptoms following labyrinthitis. The audiology department were fantastic; friendly and efficient. The ENT consultant on the other hand was rude, dismissive, invalidating and left me feeling stupid for having attended the appointment in the first place. He commented on how many times I had visited the department, stressed that I shouldn't come back and it was very clear that he felt I was wasting his time. It feels important to clarify that this was only the second appointment I'd had in ENT at RSCH, and that the first had been booked back in December 2018 as an emergency due to sensorineural hearing loss. It's quite worrying that two appointments in a department can be perceived as excessive, and as a mental health worker, it worries me that others not so aware of how unacceptable this is, might be dissuaded from seeking the care that they need, deserve and pay their taxes for. As a worker in the NHS myself, I fully appreciate the strain that there is on services, but no matter how tired, short-staffed, under-resourced or burnt out we are, we should do everything within our power to ensure that our patients do not feel this, and that it does not impact their quality of care. Unfortunately this was not the case for me today, but I hope that leaving this feedback might go someway in helping the ENT department question their practice, and improve the experience of other patients whose GP feels that they need to be re-referred back to the department.

Thank you for your feedback, I was sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope. I will, of course, share this with the department. If you would like to discuss this further please contact our PALS team on 01273 664511 or at bsuh.pals@nhs.net.

With best wishes
