"Little disappointed"

About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary

After having read the really good reviews of your A & E department I realise that my visit must have been a one off (hopefully) my husband and I had contacted 111 and they wanted to send an ambulance for my husband to take him to the RVI we were a bit shocked at this but said rather than send an ambulance we would go ourselves, which we did. My husband was very poorly and already has a number of illnesses, when we got to the hospital we were told to go to the triage nurse we were 3rd in line bearing in mind my husband could hardly stand but we had been told he had to see the nurse, well after she had had a chat with an ambulance man, then a little bit flirt with a policeman then more chat with the other nurses including a laugh with a student she eventually decided to speak to her first patient who got sent away home, ten minutes later the next patient after she had had another chat /joke with colleagues was sent to minors, then it was our turn we told her what was the matter and how my husband had been ill for 3 days, she never asked about his current/ongoing illnesses just asked if he was diabetic we said yes grade 2 so she promptly said well we wont treat you here if you want you can have your sugars tested but there is a 3 hr wait, I explain that the 111 people had said that my husband needed to be seen and were so concerned they were going to send an ambulance in reply to this she said well 111 don't see the patients ( bearing in mind she hadn't even looked at my husband who was hanging against the wall) so they cant see and we don't treat people with you husbands condition, DISMISSED and she moved onto the next patient. Now if my husband who has a number of disabilities had been examined, or even his blood pressure taken we would have felt better but NO just told to go as they wouldn't treat him and it was probably an infection that he had she said/ I realise that the staff are very busy but we did have a shock at being told that my husband was so unwell that he needed an ambulance and to go to A & E and not a walk in centre and then we got there to have this nurse that was so indifferent to us and the other patients isn't good and I only hope that this is a one off and in future we will be going to Cramlington

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback regarding your care at the A&E department, Newcastle Hospitals. We are sorry that you experienced a lengthy wait to be seen and that the triage nurse came across as being dismissive of your husbands symptoms. We have forwarded your comments to the directorate concerned, who will share with the staff involved.

If you wish to raise your concerns with someone who is not involved in your care, the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can listen to your issues and aim to help sort out problems quickly and can be contacted on Freephone 0800 032 02 02 or by email on northoftynepals@nhct.nhs.uk.

If you would like these issues to be investigated, please contact our Patient Relations Department on 0191 2231382 or patient.relations@nuth.co.uk with your contact details and they will be able to coordinate with the Directorate to review your experience.
