"Nobody came to give me an update or ask if I was okay."

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Breast Services Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology Services

(as a service user),

I arrived at ward 309, orange zone, on the morning of my operation. I was seen by 2 nurses for bloods and height/weight etc. after I was left sitting in the day room for 5 hours, not once did anyone come to me to give me an update or ask if I was okay. I had to go to the main desk myself and ask. I thought one of the staff in particular was very rude. I was the only 1 still waiting in the day room that had not been given a bed and it was now lunch time. Shortly after I was given a bed but was then left for a further 3 hours again with no communication what so ever. Having not eaten since the night before and had no water since early that morning I was dehydrated and felt extremely sick. My partner then went to ask for an update and I was told that I would not be seen that day and to come back. Overall the day was awful, I was worked up as it was about my procedure having never had one before to then be told just to go home. Having said that the surgeon and consultants were lovely and could not have apologised more. It's such a shame that I felt a couple of staff members had to let the ward down with their rude behaviour.

Dear Unhappy patient 92

I am sorry to hear of your disappointing experience in ward 309. It must have been very frustrating having spent all day waiting to be told you would not be seen that day. It must have been unpleasant having waited all day without anything to eat or drink in preparation for theatre which did not go ahead.

I am disappointed to hear that you were not kept informed of the delay, while waiting in the day rom There is a nurse assigned to this which failed on the day. I am more disappointed to hear you found a couple the nursing staff rude. I have discussed your experience with the senior charge nurse who will share this with her nursing team as this is not how she expects patients to feel while on her ward.

I hope you do not have to wait long for a date to return to the ward.

Kind Regards

Margaret Meredith, Nurse Manager
