"My Sister"

About: University Hospital Monklands University Hospital Wishaw

(as a relative),

I received grt help from a lovely lady through here in Nov 2019. Since then my sister has been treated appallingly in my opinion & that of the rest of our family. A&E at Wishaw.... been a joke. Triage should be asking what level of pain the patient is suffering before assigning a category. Unbearable pain = category 4! Nowhere private to sit so you don't upset anyone else in the waiting area. Left feeling like a proper nuisance and sent to sit in the wheelchair bay. Patients clearly not in extreme pain seen well in advance.

Story so far

In 2006 sister was nursing & became very ill & was eventually diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis. She has very bravely lived with this condition. In the last 15 months (longer now) she has become extremely ill. Not the Myelitis. In this time her gall bladder has been removed to no avail of symptoms. She has been sent round what feels like almost every hospital dept in Monklands, Hairmyers and Wishaw. In doing so she has to wait the allotted 12 week appointment slot then the 12 week waiting list for tests. Then wait for appointment for results. When the consultant doesn't come up with anything she is referred on to someone & the waiting begins again.

All the while this is happening she's in extreme pain whilst her body is falling apart. She can't eat, uses a catheter, bowel preps, anenamas her bmi 18 she's had over 18 antibiotics in 6 month with many A&E visits. The last consultant said 4 surgeons were to carry out investigative surgery. She was admitted as an emergency to hospital for a week last month for pain management.

I spoke to our GP to ask what happens next & the reply was they just don't know. Well I'm sorry that's just not good enough! We had a follow up appointment this morning to be told we can't find anything, nothing more we can do. Go home manage your pain.

When we mentioned the investigative surgery they were incredulous. "this doesn't happen here" This consultant was told by my sister when she's in the morgue they'll find out what's wrong.  I think she will give up fighting, die if she is left never mind if she catches a winter infection. She has nothing left to fight it with.

I will not let this happen whilst I have breath in my body. I hope someone can help or at least point us in the direction of someone who can even if we have to pay for it.

Dear MsMac

Thank you for taking the time to post your Care Opinion. I am very sorry to hear of you and your sister's experience.

Learning from patient experience is very important to us and I would be grateful for the opportunity to investigate this further on your sister's behalf. If your sister would be happy for me to do this could you please ask her to contact me directly on 01236 713065.

I look forward to hearing from her.

Kind regards

Melanie
