"Outstanding treatment and care"

About: West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Came off my bike on some ice last saturday. Had difficulty walking so collected by my wife and taken home thinking rest would do the trick However after an hour or so I developed severe pain in the hip, could not stand and felt nauseous and unwell. My wife called the ambulance service as it was clear that I needed medical attention and there are a number of steps to our home, whIch I could not manage. From the moment that the ambulance crew arrived I felt that I was in the hands of caring professionals, they got me out of the house and into the ambulance smoothly and I appreciated their care and good humour. Despite a busy A & E, I was taken through admission procedures in a timely way and within an hour I was in the X-ray department. Happily no fractures were found but as I was still in pain and not able to walk it was decided that a physiotherapy assessment was necessary and I was admitted to the ACU ward overnight. While I was probably the least sick person in a very busy unit I was given all necessary care and attention. Next morning I was seen by both a Doctor and then by Occupational and Physio-therapists who assessed my condition and issued and trained me on mobility equipment.

I also learned that during their examination a member of the ambulance crew had visited the ward to check on how I was. Before discharging me the therapists were assiduous in checking that I could cope at home. The NHS clearly needs more resources but with the caring and competent staff who dealt with my case it is still a fine service. Overall I felt that I was in the hands of caring and good humoured friends.
