"Left with no water"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I attended the emergency department at Treliske and would like to raise the issue that I was left without water for hours. I had no money for the bank of vending machines that were so poorly placed every time someone went to use one it let cold air come pouring in. I asked multiple different staff if they could get me some water but they're all working so hard it's easily forgotten. In the end I managed to get hold of a friend who works in the hospital and they brought me down two bottles of water.

Is there no way that a water cooler could be installed with environmentally friendly paper cups? Please?

Dear Thirsty123,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us and please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you on here. I have shared your story with the Matron in the Emergency Department, highlighting the issue of water not being easily accessible. The Matron explained to me that upon attending the Emergency Department, patients are advised not to drink until they have seen a clinician which may be why you were not offered anything to drink.

The Matron for the area made me aware that there is a water fountain in Majors 1 of the Emergency Department and that there is a 24 hour hostess service run by our colleagues from Mitie offering drinks to patients and their families. The Matron has agreed to speak to staff in the Emergency Department to remind them of the importance of offering water to patients whilst they are in the department.

If you would like to take this issue further, please do not hesitate to contact our team either by calling 01872 252793 or by emailing rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net and we can ensure that it is thoroughly investigated.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your story with us.

Best wishes,

Jess
