"Horrific bedside manner"

About: Dewsbury & District Hospital

Having fallen flat on my face on Marble and experienced huge blood loss after tripping on a rug - being told By 111 to go to A & E ( but didn’t as knew their services would be stretched given the time of year) - however 3 days later the pain and swelling became too much - I was basically seen by a doctor who was dismissive - asked what I thought would happen - if I was a beautician and if my features mattered!!!! So condescending and sexist - Would he have asked that if I was a man? I said that I was in pain and concerned about the swelling as I may have fractured or broken my nose - his only response and examination was ‘well it looks straight to me’. This doctor not only fell below his duty of care but did not even attempt to reach any reasonable expectations of this. I was sent home told that I could have a broken nose, with more concern directed to if the bruising was making me cosmetically conscious ! I felt completely disregarded, belittled and treated in a sexist manner. No examinations of any kind were carried out apart from my blood pressure by the nurse upon arrival. Obviously I didn’t have any medical expectations of what the doctor would do as I don’t have knowledge in his field, however I expected to be treated with respect and my concerns to be at least looked at!

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding your recent experience. I am really sorry to read of your accident and can only imagine how painful this must have been for you.

It is disappointing to read of your interaction with one of our member's of staff and can fully appreciate how upsetting this must have been for you. What you have described of the member of staff's attitude goes against the Trust's values and behaviours and for this I am sincerely sorry.

Your feedback will be shared with the team so that they are fully aware of the negative impact your experience has had only. It is important that staff learn from our patient's experiences.

Thank you again and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Kind regards

Clare Blackburn

(Patient Liaison Improvement Lead)
