"Broken ankle on Bennachie"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine Scottish Ambulance Service Woodend Hospital / Elective Orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I went for a walk up Bennachie and managed to slip on some gravel while coming back down and badly broke my ankle, knowing that I could not move it at all we had to phone 999 to get help. Two ambulance technicians (I am gutted I can't remember their names to say a proper thank you) and Alison from the Bennachie centre walked up the hill to get to me with three police officers, it was decided that Aberdeen Mountain Rescue would be needed to help me get down. During the wait for help everyone was amazing they even managed to get me laughing and totally took my mind off the situation. When mountain rescue arrived everyone pitched in to help and got me into a stretcher and carried me down to the ambulance. They took me to A&E where I didn't have too long to wait before I was helped by an amazing nurse I think his name was Graham, he cleaned up the graze on my ankle to took me to x-ray where they found I had an unstable fracture to the left ankle. After a couple of attempts to get my leg into a cast with my ankle at the right angle I was able to go home with an operation booked for the following week to allow the swelling to go down. I had my operation at Woodend to fit a plate and some pins and everyone there was fab especially my surgeon Mr. Forest and nurses Emma and Heather who fitted me in for a check-up any time my cast was bothering me! Since my operation I have had numerous follow up appointments with my surgeon and have had a second surgery to allow more movement in the ankle. It is now 8 months since my fall and I am still attending physiotherapy appointments but well on the road to recovery. Thank you so much to everyone who helped me Ambulance, mountain rescue, nurses, radiographers, surgeon, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy it really shows how amazing the NHS is at coming together to help and I will be forever grateful.

Dear Poppy 4486,

Thank you for taking the time to feedback to us on your experience.

It must have been extremely worrying to sustain such an injury in a remote location. I am delighted to read that the Scottish Ambulance Service crew, along with the Police officers and Alison managed to make you feel more at ease whilst they waited for specialised assistance to extricate you from the hill whilst looking after your injury.

Reading your story of care, from first assistance to you receiving an operation and then supportive physiotherapy during recovery, it is great to read the support and great care and support you have received.

I would really like to pass on your feedback to our crew, and to do that it would be useful to know the date of your accident so we can identify the call to yourself, and the crew who attended? With that in mind, I would really appreciate if you could call 01224 812200 to speak to our admin team. If you can explain who you are and pass on the information, we can do the rest to pass on your valuable feedback to the crew.

I do hope you manage to have a great Christmas and all the very best for 2020!

Thank you again for taking the time to feedback.
