I have always been a big supporter of L+D however today's experience with my mother was pretty terrible.I recognise that hospitals are woefully underfunded however this is no reason to 'lose' people, leave them in a corridor for hours on end and forget them, walk into my mum's examination (while she had her too removed) to discuss non medical issues or suggest that people are safer at home because there are so many infections going round in the hospital the risk of contracting a serious one is very high. The culmination of a fabulous 8 hours at L+D was when after being given a drip to counteract dehydration(the first of two) the canula was displaced spraying the room with blood - my mum had blood all over her arm, hand, trousers, shoes and splatters on her face and hair - the staff set to work cleaning the floor however she was left like this ,we were told that she probably didn't need the second bag (she was less than a quarter of the way through the first ) ,given a box of antibiotics and told to go home - clearly my mum who suffers from vascular dementia was very distressed but none of the staff asked how she was or made any attempt to clean her up - I had to do this in the patient toilet before leaving.Overall a very depressing experience at apparently one of the best rated hospitals in the country.
