"My accident"

About: Scarborough General Hospital / Accident and emergency Scarborough General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I had the misfortune to fall 8ft from a ladder in June 2019 and immediately knew I had broken my right wrist. I was taken by car to A&E, I walked in and was logged into the system and asked to take a seat. I remember it was busy.

I felt a little queasy and went outside to get some fresh air and on my return I spoke to the receptionist and told her I felt as if I was about to pass out. She immediately reassured me and summoned help which arrived immediately and I was placed on a trolley and taken to the assessment area where I was immediately assessed and sent for scans.
It transpired that not only had I broken my wrist but had also broken several ribs, partially deflated my right lung and had a bleed on my liver and my right kidney. To add to the complications I take blood thinners, which is a real worry especially when you have internal bleeding. When I walked into A&E I was totally unaware of anything but a broken wrist!
I would like to place on record my grateful thanks to the receptionist, all levels of staff from the Surgeons to the Doctors, to the Radiographers, to the Nurses, to the Ancillary Care Workers who were all absolutely brilliant throughout my 8 day stay. I received first class care from everyone. WHAT A BRILLIANT TEAM! I am receiving physiotherapy as an outpatient and once again I am indebted to the rehab staff for their help and expertise.
WE SHOULD ALL VALUE THE BRILLIANT STAFF WE HAVE AT SCARBOROUGH HOSPITAL.
In my case I prefer not to think what might have transpired if I had, had to go to my next nearest A&E Department for treatment as, given it is a 40 mile journey, this would have had serious consequences given I was taking blood thinners and had internal bleeding of which I was not aware of at that time.
When I hear anyone complain about the level of care or level of service at Scarborough Hospital I take great delight and pleasure in informing them of how I was cared for. It doesn’t take long for them to realise that they have fallen into the trap of NOT listening to the vast majority of satisfied patients and instead siding with a tiny minority who would no doubt complain just about anything be it good bad or indifferent and who mistakenly think it’s big of them to point out failings in service or treatment without putting their arguments into perspective and take account of the fact that it’s NOT the hospital staff’s fault there are backlogs and long queues and that the staff don’t create high demands for treatment and that the delays are solely due to lack of investment in medical staff, at all levels, by Government, resulting in too few medical staff to cope with an ever increasing workload.
In reality that minority will on reflection realise they have little or nothing to complain about and everything to be thankful for.
Well done Scarborough Hospital and keep up the good work. I shall forever be indebted to you.
