"Feeling listened to and valued"

About: Inclusion Thurrock (Talking Therapies)

(as a service user),

I’ve had CBT in the past and have been on antidepressants for many years. I suffered a mini breakdown earlier this year and could not pin-point what the cause was as from the outside my life seemed to be going well and there were no major changes.

I referred myself to Inclusion Thurrock and felt listened to from the very first contact. My initial telephone screening went longer than scheduled but I didn’t feel rushed or that the practitioner was trying to hurry things along. I attended the Time for Change group sessions which were really helpful in preparing me for therapy and helped me make sense of why I needed therapy at that time.

When I had my first few 1:1 sessions I honestly wasn’t sure how my therapist (James) would be able to help as I wasn’t 100% sure what was bothering me and what I needed to work on. However him listening to me and getting a general picture of my past experiences and how I behave now was really crucial to understanding why my mood may have dipped and the work we’ve done together has been so helpful. At the moment I’m now doing Computerised CBT and though I don’t have face-to-face reviews with the practitioner I still feel supported by her and feel like I’m making progress.

It’s helped that overall probably 99% if not 100% of the staff I’ve encountered have been so pleasant and approachable. Even staff on reception have been lovely which is something really important to know when you’re feeling anxious and low.

Manage the team of therapists, and do some therapy myself.

Dear Missy89,

I'm so glad you shared your experience with us, and that it's been such a positive one! What's especially nice about your story is that it is such a wonderful example of how the nature of help can change throughout the journey!

You mentioned CBT and medication in the past, but then also say about attending Time for Change - our willingness and readiness to make those changes is so important in that journey to recovery. You also experienced some one to one therapy, which sounds like it was helpful, but have also moved on to a guided self-help approach using online CBT.

Just like our difficulties, as we start to make changes, the type of help that can best support us will also change. I'm so glad that you have embraced that, and are making use of the many different approaches that will support you in your journey.

I'm sure you will continue to make progress, but even more sure that you're in a better place than ever to understand just what helps you. And that is true growth!

Wishing you the very best for the future,

Mark
