"Senior review was lacking and communication was poor"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow

(as a relative),

My 90 year old grandmother had a fall at home and fractured her hip.  My parents took her to A&E.  She arrived there at 5 pm, and didn't get into a proper bed until 11pm.  She was fasted for theatre, and cancelled 4 days running, before finally going for her operation on the 5th day.  She died in recovery after her operation.

We felt communication was poor.  We were never given the name of her consultant.

We also felt Senior review was lacking - she had low blood pressure and a poor urine output, but wasn't reviewed by anyone senior.  Her kidney function deteriorated, and led to another cancellation.

Dear JB57,

First of all, I would like to offer my heartfelt sympathies to you and your family, I can only imagine what you must be going through in dealing with the loss of your Grandmother.

I am very sorry to read about your Grandmother's experience, the delays she had and the lack of communication, please accept my sincere apologies.

I have talked through your experience with the General Manager for the service and if you feel able, we would be grateful if you could contact Susan Groom, General Manager (Susan.Groom@ggc.scot.nhs.uk). This will allow us to investigate your concerns, learn from your experiences and provide you some further detail – we would also like to meet with you if that would be helpful to you and your family.

Kind Regards

Morag Gardner
