"GPs refused to treat me as an emergency patient"

About: General practices in Forth Valley

(as the patient),

I have a chronic medical condition which generally, the doctors at this Medical Centre have been helpful in managing but every time I put in my repeat prescription I am made to feel like some sort of addict because the doctor only prescribes a weeks supply and it takes 3-4 working days for them to sign it. This means I need to put a prescription request in sometimes 3 or 4 days after I got my last prescription to give them 4 days to sign the next one.

Having a chronic illness, my immune system isn't great so when another illness creeps up it can be worse than usual and hard to detect early due to pain meds masking pain signals. Last week I ended up with a UTI which for me, is exhausting so I went to my local pharmacy who were able to give me emergency treatment of a 3 day course of antibiotics. They helped & I did feel slightly better but a couple of days after the course I felt it come back worse. I returned to the pharmacy who informed me they aren't authorised to give further treatment & gave me a form for my GP to get an emergency appointment the next morning.

I called my GP & was told I didn't need an appointment to see a GP & they would get me a prescription for antibiotics by 4pm that day. I was surprised but thought they must trust the pharmacists judgement & must be busy. At 4pm I went to the GP & was told there was no prescription yet & should call again at 5pm. When I called them at 5pm I was told by someone else at reception that they require a urine sample! By this time I am in agony and using all my energy to drag myself to the toilet every 5mins. Why was I not told this in the first place so that I could get treatment asap?

I rushed back to the GP to give a sample then was told it will be sent away for testing! I am a microbiologist & know all they need to do is a dipstick test in the doctors surgery for confirmation of infection! It takes seconds! It's Escherichia coli! I thought they might have just handed it in to a doctor, done the test & gave me the appropriate antibiotic. 5 minutes of their time is all I asked. But no, I was told it would be several days before I even hear about it and that's with me contacting them! I handed in the sample after referral by the pharmacist!

This is completely unacceptable, not to mention the added stress which is now affecting my education as I have university exams this week. I now have pains in my back and sides which indicates the infection has spread to my kidneys. I already have mobility problems but now I can barely walk because these GPs refused to treat me as an emergency patient when advised to. My only other option is A&E which I do not have time or energy for or to find an out of hours clinic via nhs24.
