Mum was rushed to ED and discovered to have a leaking aortic aneurysm. We live 2 hours away and staff kept us informed and we were able to get to ED to see mum before she went to Theatre.
Both medical and nursing staff kept us informed of her progress after surgery and explained that she was being kept in theatre until a bed became available on ITU.
During her time in ITU she received exemplary care from both nursing and medical staff. Nothing was too much trouble.
Sadly the following day she deteriorated and we were called in. Over the next 24 hours she was visited by her 6 grandchildren, 3 children and partners and her brother and sister in law.
The nursing staff were compassionate towards the family as well as caring for Mum.
We were all kept informed and never made to feel like we were a burden.
Staff worked around us and never made us feel like we were in the way. They explained what they were doing as they did it and reassured us that this was not a problem.
We all felt empowered to ask questions and valued by the way staff openly answered them.
She was a very special lady and it was lovely to hear that the porter who took her to theatre had commented what a lovely lady she was and he had only met her for a few minutes.
This feedback reassured us that she felt safe and cared for during her journey to theatre whiling understanding that there was a possibility it would be the last journey she would make.
Sadly mum deteriorated and despite full intervention her condition did not improve.
As a family we had the privilege of all sitting with her as she passed away. Staff were discretely on hand when we needed them and all of our needs were managed with care , compassion, empathy and dignity.
Having worked in the NHS for 29 years I can reflect that this standard of care is what we all strive to provide.
On behalf of the whole family and Mum we would like to send a big thank you to all staff that cared for mum from the Ambulance crew, ED staff, porters, theatre staff and everyone on ITU.
"Care given to mum"
