"MRI scan result"

About: Southmead Hospital

I, too, am awaiting the result of an MRI scan at Southmead and have been told there is up to an 8-10 week wait. This is unacceptable. People often wait 7 or 8 weeks (perhaps longer?) to get the scan from the time they see their GP/Consultant who then requests it. If there is another 2 - 3 month wait before the result gets back to the referring clinician, then you could be looking at between 4-5 months from the time of referral until the patient gets their result. How is this in any way acceptable? It can only be hoped that if there was something wrong on the scan, the result would come back sooner (otherwise the problem could have got worse during the waiting time), but I wonder if that is actually the case.

This is not a new problem for Southmead - but what, if anything, is being done about it?

The Imaging Department would like to assure patients waiting for MRI results that scans are reported in order of urgency with very urgent scans being reported within a few days.

Unfortunately scans assigned by the Consultant Radiologists with a priority of routine are currently taking longer than we would like to be reported. The wait for a report varies by the specialist required to review the images and make the report. The Longest waits for results are for Musculoskeletal MRI. As part of our working practice we are currently outsourcing reports of which MRI is part of this process. This is not the service we aspire to provide and we are working hard to try to resolve the current situation.
