"Hospital care for my partner after a stroke"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Acute Stroke Unit Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a relative),

My partner suffered a stroke and would have died without the wonderful care of the paramedics in Dundee and all the staff in Ward 33 of Ninewells Hospital. Their commitment to his recovery and to supporting us (his family) is beyond words. They treat him and us with professional expertise of the highest quality and we are fortunate to have a world class hospital in Dundee. But it's the kindness and consideration for us at such a stressful time that is particularly noticeable. Everyone works together for his comfort and our well-being. The nursing staff manage his personal needs with sensitivity and even after long shifts when the pressure of work is huge they retain humour and compassion. The doctors have aways been available to give us updates and to answer our questions with consideration and empathy.

Just to give a few examples:

*a nurse took a video of my partner shaving himself so we could see what progress he is making

*a doctor who I hadn't met before intervened when I was on my way to the ward as he thought I might be distressed and asked if he could help

*a nurse in training realised he was uncomfortable and took steps to help

* a nurse sat with him all night for the first week as he was delirious to make sure he didn't hurt himself

*a doctor took time to reassure me when I was concerned that he was not responding to treatment.

I have always supported the NHS. This experience has made me realise just how valuable it is to us in Scotland. If there is anything I can do to help support our health service please let me know.

Hi Suibhan,

Many thanks for taking the time to post such glowing tributes of our staff, during what must still be a challenging time in the lives of both you and your partner.

It's fair to say we are only a very small part of this process but it's clear to see, the results of public awareness campaigns, the quick thinking and actions of loved ones, the continuous development of our staff and the excellent collaboration we have with our colleagues in NHS Tayside, is translating into great outcomes for our patients.

I dope hope your partner is continuing to do well in respect of their recovery and I wish you both the very best of health and happiness for the future.!!

Dear “Suibhan”

Thank you so much for taking the time to share such lovely feedback. We understand how difficult it is to have your loved one in hospital and I am delighted to hear that the care of all the stroke multidisciplinary team made this journey a bit easier for you and your family.

I have shared your feedback with all the stroke team who very much appreciate your kind words. We hope your partner continues to improve and wish you both all the best for the future.

Kind regards

Fay Cunningham

Charge Nurse, Ward 33
