"Although lots of positives, it could have been better"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My mother of 86 had the unfortunate experience of attending accident and emergency department after a mechanical fall in the house resulting in a fracture of her hip on Saturday. Although there was lots of positives in her care we feel that this experience could have been better.

We arrived by ambulance and was quickly taken to a room for assessment. The nurse looking after her couldn’t have been any kinder to us. 20 mins in and my mother had a full assessment, pain relief, an X-ray and a dr was in examining her. The handover was taking place and I requested further analgesia for my mother and I was assured this would be deal with. The young nurse who never introduced themselves on coming in to the room didn’t appreciate the pain my mother was in and their demonstrated lack of knowledge on holistic care was rather alarming. The nurse carried out a very quick set of observations and said her heart rate was not elevated dismissively however my mother is on beta blockers.

She was transferred to was 15 and from what I have seen is a very busy ward but have no complains with the care

I was deeply saddened by this experience as I have had very positive experiences in your department.

Dear Mb124,

Thank you for taking the time to raise the positive aspects of your mothers care and the concerns you have highlighted.

I am sorry that you felt there were aspects of her care that were not so positive and have caused you some sadness. In order for us to learn from this I think it would be important for us to review your mothers individual journey and also provide you with a targeted response.

I would be grateful if you could contact the patient affairs team who will communicate with me and the emergency department to further review and respond to you. The contact detail is Yvonne.ross@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk.

I hope your mother is recovering well and rehabilitation is going smoothly.

Best wishes

Andy
