"Worrying and not sleeping"

About: Specialist mental health services / Psychological therapies

(as a relative),

My partner has some mental health illness and was referred to Talking Therapies.   Taken over 6 months to receive an appointment to be told the appointment has been cancelled as he has been discharged.   We have received no letter or call to inform us.   I rang on his behalf today but because I explained we were using hands-free the lady hung up on me telling me to call back when I was safely parked up.   Tried calling again no answer, no help.   I work so I am trying to help my partner sort this in between.   He is worrying and not sleeping.

Dear lacertaby99

I'm sorry to hear your partner's experience of our service was so unsatisfactory.

All our referrals are contacted a day or so after receipt and an initial assessment is arranged, which is available immediately, but depends on a patient's availability too. I cannot comment on your partner's specific case without knowing his/her name to consult their record, but the only reason a patient might be discharged at this stage is if we have tried to make contact by phone and letter and not received a reply.

All our administrators and clinicians are encouraged not to speak to patients who are driving, even hands-free, as discussing emotional topics related to therapy can be particularly unsettling. We would not wish to put anyone in any danger.

I am very happy to offer you more precise details on what happened to your partner's referral. Please see my phone number below. If your partner is able to call us that would be best; if you wish to speak to us on his/her behalf, we will need their written or verbal consent to discuss their details with you.

Regards,
Marc McDonagh
