I accessed this service 3 months ago to address alcohol dependency. The first impressions were fantastic. The waiting list was short and I met with a dedicated and attentive nurse who took my weight, height, etc. Few months later I meet with a qualified counsellor who I still see today, very helpful and very effective.
However, I'm afraid that is about all I can say is positive about this service. I found this service fragmented. The actual intervention support I received to help manage addiction was nothing more than a tick box exercise. It felt very one size fits all, which doesn't work with addiction, on the contrary. Sessions were looking at bits of paper with facts about the effects of alcohol on the body and mind. I'm pretty sure 99% of those addicted are aware of the facts. The sessions I attended were rushed and my goals were never referred back to. The first 2 sessions I was set, let's call it homework, this was never discussed during the next sessions. Then the most disappointing part of all. I was lucky enough to walk into my session with my head held high and say "I've been alcohol free for 7 days". My keyworker informs me (I have no say in this) that in that case we will have 2 more sessions and they will close my case. Although, I haven't received those last 2 sessions, no contact from them.. I must be cured, right? I don't know whether this is down to a lack of training but recovery is a long process. I would say that my support has been withdrawn at the most critical point in the recovery process, however, I am almost 4 weeks alcohol free with very little thanks to this service. Once I get to the 12 month mark, I will be applying for a PhD where I will focus on the effectiveness of rehabilitation services in the West Midlands. People deserve a better quality service than I received.
"Told I would have two more sessions then they would close my case"
