"Feels like family"

About: St Lukes Hospice

(as a service user),

I was admitted to Northwick Park Hospital. Had a hernia in June 2018 then they found a cyst and I needed a full hysterectomy. Then they found cancer. I was operated on at Basingstoke Hospital and stayed in for 6 weeks.

I have been coming to the hospice since November 2018. It's so lovely at the hospice. The staff take such wonderful care of us. I had a birthday cake on my birthday and whe I could not comb my hair they did it all for me. It feels like family when I come here. I have had massages and they are wonderful. The physio is great too. I really love that they provide transportation and pick me up and drop me off.

They are so great here I have no suggestions on any improvements.

Hello. Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience of St Luke's Hospice with Care Opinion.

For most people birthdays are a special time. The team at St Luke's Hospice recognise that for many people living with an incurable illness birthdays are important as for some it can be a goal or a milestone to celebrate with those who are important to them. Like yourself some people refer to the hospice team (patients, staff and volunteers) as an extended part of their family. With this in mind we ensure that birthdays are marked and celebrated with a cake, a card and a singing of happy birthday.

One of the fundamental aims of the hospice is to support people to live well with their illness, this includes physiotherapy and complementary therapy which can enhance confidence and overall well-being. I am pleased to hear how much you feel you have benefited from the additional therapies.

The team at St Luke's Hospice are fortunate to be supported by a team of committed and dedicated volunteers, this includes drivers. Without the support of our drivers many people would not be able to attend the hospice due to transportation challenges. I will pass on your comments to the team.
