"It was my last hope of kicking my addiction"

About: Inclusion Visions Thurrock (Drug & Alcohol Recovery Service)

(as a service user),

I was a heroin addict for many years from a young age I was in and out of prison and came across drug prescribing services in Thurrock, it was my last hope of kicking my addiction as didn't want to end up dead like my brother and friends through overdosing on heroin.   I have been on methadone for 23 years it has a bad stigma attached to it but it was the best thing that happened to me gave stability to think what my next step was.   After a few years not injecting it was time to find work which I done.   Never looked back since only forward to my next target in my journey.   With all the help from the staff at the ddu it wouldn't have been possible.   I have now completely come of methadone and I feel great.

Hello julygs65

What an inspiring story. It's clear how hard you have worked to change your life and also how much you have achieved. I am sure it will be inspiring for others to read this and hopefully seek support if needed. I am sorry to hear about the losses you have experienced along the way and very glad that you made choices that sent you down a different route. That would not have been easy.

Delighted to hear that you feel staff have supported you which I will feed back to them. Keep looking forward as you have been doing and congratulations on now being completely off Methadone, working and feeling great!

I wish you all the best

Emer
