"Parking in disabled bays"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow

(as a relative),

My mother was recently an inpatient at QEUH, it was a nightmare to try getting a space.

I have a blue badge, but your parking attendants are not doing enough to monitor the abuse of these spaces in the multi storeys during the day.

Even worse at around 8pm, I sat in my car on a number of evenings before / after visiting and witnessed staff members in uniform park up in the multi storeys disabled bays, with no blue badge and walked into the hospital.

I am sorry but they  should know better and should show some respect to disabled persons.

Dear Parkingell

Thank you very much for your post regarding the monitoring of car park spaces in relation to blue badge holders. It is disappointing to note your comments regarding the misuse of parking bays. I shall pass your comments onto my colleagues who are responsible for this and ask if they could look into this further.

Your post is very much welcomed as it allows for us to hopefully make improvements.

Very best Wishes

Sheila

Dear Parkigell

Please find a further response from my colleagues, who tirelessly try and alleviate our parking difficulties.

Dear Parkingell

Having shared your comments with my colleagues they have provided the following.

Once again many thanks for your post, much appreciated.

I was truly sorry to hear of the difficulty you experienced getting a parking bay on the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and Royal Hospital for Children Campus.

Demand on the site is intense and individual car parks do get full from time to time at busy periods. If you are on site in the future and can't find a space quickly, please go to Multi Storey Car Park 2 (on the internal road accessed via the old hospital main entrance at Govan Rd) where a Parking Attendant at the front will direct you to a bay. If you need assistance to get to your appointment from there, an internal patient buggy is available to take and return you to most services (including all inpatient areas). There is a buzzer on the wall at the main exit where you can order it.

Although the number of disabled bays provided is higher than national recommendations, some selfish people (unfortunately including NHSGG and C staff ) will opportunistically park in patient and visitor or Disabled bays when not authorised to do so. This normally happens when the Car Park Attendant is patrolling elsewhere, and although an Unauthorised Parking Notice (the only legal sanction available) - will be issued, that space is out of commission until the driver returns, causing real inconvenience to others. Our frequent monitoring of the bays indicates that the abuse is normally in the range of 5-7% - reaching maximum of 10%) and whilst that is not in any way extreme, as noted it still causes real inconvenience. CPAs will with multiple daily checks to prevent abuse where possible, and also to issue Unauthorised Parking Notices where it does occur.
