"Waiting time re orthopaedic surgery."

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Orthopaedics (Wards 10a, 10b, 10c &10d)

(as the patient),

I have had hip pain over the last 18 months ,my gp referred me to an orthopaedic consultant this process took 9 months.

When seen by my consultant I was told I required a hip replacement. I was then told the waiting time for surgery is between 9 months and 1 year.

All staff who were involved were superb, all very kind & courteous. Unfortunately we now have a health service that simply cannot  cope with the demand.

Having worked as a nurse for 44 years I feel sad and  quite upset that I and many others have to wait this time, and pain can be difficult to cope with.

Dear Kilmarie

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch. I was sorry to hear that you have been having such a difficult time and have pain.

Regrettably our Orthopaedic Department has been experiencing extended waiting times There are a number of factors which are impacting on our ability to meet the national waiting times guarantee. We would wish to assure you that we are making every effort to reduce the waiting times for our patients and improve the service that we provide.

Can I suggest that you discuss with your GP about how much pain you are be experiencing and the impact this is having on your quality of life. Your GP will be able to provide a clinical update to your consultant or explore if there is anything further that can be done to help manage any symptoms you are having. Our colleagues in Orthopaedics' are working tirelessly to help reduce the waiting times and will continue to do so, however I fully appreciate your frustrations.

I will share your feedback with the Management Team responsible for Orthopaedics.

Wishing you the very best and hope that you have your surgery soon.

Take Care

Sheila

Hi Sheila,

I made it very clear that when I decided to be involved in care opinion this was not about the QUEH,all staff are superb and doing their very best.

I wrote it in the vain hope the Scottish Government take action on waiting times.

If and when my pain increases I am more than capable of making contact with my GP.

I again reiterate this is nothing to do with the QUEH staff.

I did not find the reply very helpful but thank you for your good wishes,

Regards Kilmarie
