"I feel that we have been abandonned"

About: Fife Community Services / Community Paediatrics Queen Margaret Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My son has an ASD diagnosis and been seen regularly by a paediatrician for the last 7 years up until now.

His last appointment was in mid 2018, he was supposed to be reviewed again 3 months from then which would have been August / September 2018!

It is now November 2019 and he has still not been seen and I was told yesterday that they could not give him an appointment due to a lack of staff!! It took me over 3 weeks and countless phone calls to even have someone get back to me regarding the issue.

I was told that there was no one available to see him and the best that they could do was to send me a referral form for the community disability nursing team, which I have to complete and fill out myself. I then asked if they could help with my sons medication as this should have been increased over a year ago, to be told that they did not know and to get back to them if need be and there would MAYBE be something they could do, that the person dealing with medication is only dealing with kids with ADHD at the moment.

We have been involved with the community disability nursing team a few years ago so I also know that the referral process is not a quick one and that they also are very busy as they cover a large area.

My son is struggling at the moment and desperately needs an appointment and his medication increased, but they seem simply not willing to help.. I understand that there may be staff shortages but surely there must be a solution, it is not my sons fault that he has seemingly been forgotten about for the last year, and I am disgusted with the service.

I am a single Mum with 3 children in total and we are all struggling just now from the sheer lack of any professional help or interest. I feel that we have been abandoned to a degree my son does not deserve this and is surely entitled to help.

Dear Tired exasperated Mum - I am sorry to hear that your experience of the Community Paaediatric Service has not been a positive one. If you contact me on 01383 565458 tomorrow I can get some further information from you.

Best wishes
