"Poor patient care and diagnosis"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Out Patient Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Two of my sons have been seen and treated at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital. Both boys have chronic ear infections. An adenoidectomy was performed on my eldest but did not insert grommets during this procedure as it was deemed unnecessary in Nov 2018. Within a few weeks my eldest was on another course of antibiotics for an ear infection. We subsequently sought a second opinion and the consultant we saw and another who performed the grommet insertion procedure agreed that it was necessary. It took a year for my son to receive the treatment he required as a result of poor diagnosis in my opinion and he was subjected to an extra general anaesthetic.

I took my middle son to RACH recently  for an Audiology and ENT appointment and his appointment. We had taken him to see a consultant privately in Edinburgh who said that he required grommets would refer us to NHS Grampian for the procedure. The doctor very briefly examined him and determined that there was nothing wrong with my son.

Dear PhonicRook

Access to Advocacy Services might support you further?

We are so sorry that your experiences with your sons has not been the best experience for either you or them. From a 3rd sector perspective we know the NHS takes such incidents very seriously and will endeavour to find out what has happened in this case. Any member of the public has a right to make a complaint and the NHS has set up PASS (Patient Advice and Support Service) to discuss issues, which you can access, if you have not already done so.

We also know that working through a complaint can be quite anxiety-provoking, but in the meetings the Advocacy Service in Aberdeen have attended, the NHS have tried to make people feel as comfortable as possible.

However sometimes people are not satisfied with the outcome of their complaints when dealt with internally by the NHS and if you wish to take this further, some people choose to do so through the SPSO (Scottish Public Services Ombudsman).

We do hope this information is useful and that the outcomes from this situation are positive and actively help the wellbeing of you and your family

Best Wishes
