"Care recieved"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My mum attended hairmyers hospital emergency dept one evening in August 2019 at approximately 7 pm

It was a very busy Saturday night and my mum attended with a problem she had for a few weeks but had only just made me aware of, and she had not been to her gp and while she was unwell , I was aware she should have been to her gp

I worked in Ed as a senior charge nurse for 23 years so I was aware of this, and also the challenges to Ed departments but my mum was unwell and she was my priority

The triage nurse asked my mum all relevant questions and when my mum told her she was too frightened to attend gp she was so very kind to her

At this stage I apologise as I can’t remember names but I think it was Ruth

She then took my mum to resus and attached her to the monitor in a calm reassuring manner giving full explanation at every stage

She then handed my mum over to I think Caroline, again apologies if I have it wrong , who carried out the rest of her investigation in an extremely competent, kind manner again with full explanations

Whilst waiting for the doctor she was very kind and chatty despite being extremely busy

My mum was seen by the medical doctor and admitted to medical receiving

Thomas, who I know from before also popped in to say hello

The porter who I think was called Charlie took my mum to the ward, and again showed massive consideration and respect to my dad who is disabled by waiting and not rushing him at all , as did the admitting staff at receiving

As mentioned I worked in Ed in and I simply cannot praise the staff in this department enough , they were efficient, professional, respectful and kind and this unit is a credit to Ed nursing and a a department

The staff in receiving were also very good especially the poor doctor who had to break bad news

My mums condition deteriorated quickly and she was admitted to hdu

Again I cannot praise the staff highly enough , the medical staff had excellent honest communication and the nurses were amazing, so kind caring and respectful

Her journey continues some not so good areas of care but again some excellent including her ent consultant mr Calder

I apologise for the delay and forgetting names but again Ed and hdu were faultless

Dear Lesley mcg

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience when attending the Emergency department with your mum. It must be a very difficult time for you and of course your mum, as her journey of care continues.

Taking the time to share such positive feedback about your mothers initial admission is very much appreciated and to remember staff names so accurately is admirable. I will ensure your comments are shared with individual staff members and the wider teams.

With your experience as a senior charge nurse within ED you will be very understanding of how daunting the experience can be for patients and their families. It is therefore reassuring that you felt the care was efficient and respectful.

I notice that as your mum's journey continues there are some areas of not so good care and would welcome any direct feedback to assist with any concerns you have. Please contact patient affairs on 01355 585325 if you would like to discuss these issues.

Thank you again for sharing your comments. Staff will be delighted to read your feedback.

Best Wishes

Lise
