Following a fall I took my elderly mother to Barnet Hospital, the Doctor dressed her wound and instructed another staff member to give her a tetanus injection as well as advising us to go to the GP for a new dressing a few days later. All of the staff took great care of my mother and were very patient when explaining everything. The GP had no appointments so we went to the St Albans Hospital nurse led clinic but although they could dress the wound, it had become infected requiring IV antibiotics and we needed to return to Barnet. This we did and my mother was seen by a lovely young man in triage who arranged for her to be transferred in a wheelchair to the Acute Medical/Ambulatory Unit? After a wait, my mother was seen by a nurse who took her vitals and a blood sample, then we waited until the results came back and were then seen by a Doctor who not only arranged for the IV antibiotics but also picked up on an irregular heartbeat and started treatment for that too! Over approx 2 weeks or so, we returned to the unit numerous times for the IV and further treatment to ensure the infection and wound had cleared up. The unit was spotless even though at times it very busy and packed solid. All of the staff were wonderful and friendly from the cleaner, the receptionists to the nurses and Doctors were all very pleasant and made my mother feel comfortable and well cared for. One of the nurses even checked to see if people wanted tea or coffee while they were waiting. Another thing I noticed was that when it was busy, the receptionist asked non patients to give up their seats for patients coming in. Which was fair as some patients had three people with them and it's not a huge waiting area. My mother and I were very impressed, the nurses seem to have a great deal of pride in their work and want the unit to be the best and I think they have made it the best too. Well done to all.
"Excellent Care."
