"Disgusting care of vulnerable patient"

About: Lincoln County Hospital

My grandma was admitted to Shuttle worth ward after breaking her hip and arm but was still fully mobile, walking on it and eating and drinking herself. Nearly 3 weeks on, and she can no longer feed herself or drink herself and has never once left her bed. She has dementia and has basically been left to die. Doctor rung today to say she's not eating or drinking and they don't want to keep treating her for chest infections etc but when we ask the nurses, they tell us she has eaten and drunk fine. Totally conflicting information. Physios have just left her as she doesn't understand instructions she's given so they told us as family we can give it a try with a sheet of instructions they have left. They are professionals and should be looking to remove or work with barriers they are faced with and not just decide to leave her! We are not trained physios and could do more harm than good! She has lost muscle tone through being left laid back in her bed all day everyday and now cannot even sit up herself. I stress again, this lady was physically very fit and independent before being admitted to this ward and we are now being told there is no chance of rehabilitation. If care staff had done their job from day one instead of deeming it too much hard work, she would not be in the massively deteriorated state she is in now. It seems that because she has dementia which creates extra or challenging barriers, she is just left to the wayside. She worked and paid into the system all her life to be treated like this??? When we go up to see her, she says "oh I am thirsty" and we give her drinks as she clearly hasn't had anything to drink for some time as her mouth is furred up. Any drinks left for her by staff are beyond her reach at the end of the bed! To make things worse, we cannot go up and give her these very basics in care now as the ward is closed due to norovirus. If you have any choice at all, please do not allow your vulnerable relatives to be put on this ward. This is not what good care is. We have complained but nothing has changed and are now considering legal action. Talk about failure in duty of care!!!

I am very sorry that the nursing care of your Grandma on Shuttleworth Ward is below the standard that is expected for all our patients. The issues and concerns that you have identified are unacceptable and I as Matron for Orthopaedics feel need to be investigated and addressed immediately. Therefore I would ask that you contact myself or the ward so that we can obtain further information and address these concerns.

Kind Regards

Angie Mason
