"My experience was not pleasant at all"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

I was booked in for a colonoscopy procedure in September.  I was obviously very anxious and nervous.  The nurse who booked me in was professional and efficient as was the nurse who directed me to the waiting area.  However, the nurse that led me to the procedure room was totally inappropriate - they said I may well have heard that I was going into the torture chamber, and continued saying it's not really that bad but it may be painful.

There was another nurse there who overheard these remarks and as well as looking horrified, attempted to stop the other nurse from saying anything else by walking across us.

I was given sedation and then I felt a tube being inserted, I feel sure some time should have been given to allow the sedation to work but there wasn't and I was extremely aware of pain during this procedure.  My anxiety may have heightened this but it does not alter the fact that I was roughly manhandled by this nurse, it was exceptionally painful and I felt violated by this person who roughly pushed my stomach and manhandled me throughout the procedure.

Having worked in the medical services myself for a long time I feel that this particular nurse should be made aware of how they made me feel and believe they need some retraining in their people skills.  I would not and never have done spoken to anyone as they spoke to me.

it is not my intention to get anyone in trouble but this was not the correct way to treat a patient and they need to be aware of my feedback to learn from it.

The endoscopist, I have no complaints about as I could not really see them as they were behind a screen.

I have my report from the surgery, which gives me the names of the nursing staff but I am not sure which was which.

They were supposed to support and calm me not raise my anxiety.

My results were fine which is good but my experience was not pleasant at all.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your experience within our endoscopy unit. We would very much wish to look into the issues you have raised further and I would therefore be really grateful if you could contact me direct to provide your name and date of your procedure. Our expectation would always be that patients are supported through their procedure and that anxiety is not raised by any remarks from the team.

My email address is karen.andrews@aapct.scot.nhs.uk and my direct dial telephone number is 01292 617123. I would be pleased to hear from you and that will allow us to address the concerns you have raised.

kind regards

Karen Andrews, General Manager, Surgical Services.
