"Support for Coeliac diagnosis"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Nutrition

(as a service user),

I was diagnosed after having an endoscopy with coeliac disease.  This followed a blood test showing I had iron deficiency.  I was given the news on Christmas Eve 2018.  After enjoying my Christmas and New Year I buckled down to a gluten free diet.  My doctor then sent my details onto the relevant department and I have since attended 3 different appointments.  The first was a group discussion where I and my wife were given a run through of what to eat and where to buy it.  I was also given details of the prescribed gluten free list of foods.  The second appointment was with the dietitian who asked for information on my medical history.  The third appointment was with Specialist Fiona, this meeting was very informative.  She spent time discussing different food options, different things to try which might make the diet more palatable.  She advised me to ask my doctor for iron tablets and also said I should have the flu jab.

Without all this support following a gluten free diet would be much harder.  I feel it is very necessary and is much appreciated as this is a huge lifestyle and health change which is hard to get your head around.

Dear Wheat Free

Thank you for taking the time to leave your story. I am sorry it has taken a few days to reply.

I am delighted to hear that you found the group session for people with coeliac disease and the appointments helpful. I have shared your comments with the people involved in your story.

It can be difficult adapting to a gluten free diet and lifestyle but it sounds as if you are managing really well and are feeling much better. I hope you are getting ready to enjoy your first gluten free Christmas and New Year.

I am really pleased you decided to share your story as we really like getting comments and feedback from the people we see.

Thanks again.
