"Outstanding maternity care got me through a tough few days"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

My elective section due to breech position of baby was a mixed experience, and I'm awaiting an appointment for a debrief. However, 3 members of staff at AMH provided outstanding care that deserves to be recognised.

Midwives Nicky and Wendy cared for me on Summerfield ward. Both listened to me, provided excellent care, were kind, knowledgeable, friendly, practical, and advocated for me. I trusted them completely. We had been discharged and upsettingly had to be re-admitted the following day. I was so relieved to see Nicky on duty again as I trusted her to help get us sorted.

Caroline, who I think is an auxiliary nurse in the neonatal nursery, also went above and beyond. It was a public holiday when I went looking for the infant feeding team for advice, and they weren't available. Seeing how upset I was, Caroline took myself, baby and my husband into a quiet room, listened to our story and kindly provided advice and reassurance. She also visited Summerfield to check on me and see how feeding was going, which was an incredibly kind gesture which we very much appreciated.

These 3 women got me through a tough few days, and thanks to them I am still exclusively breast feeding my daughter.

Dear September baby,

Thank you for getting in touch to share your positive experience of the post natal ward. It is reassuring to hear that Nicky and Wendy listened to you and provided care that was suitable to both you and your baby's needs. I will share your feedback with them.

This will also be shared with Caroline in the neonatal unit and it sounds like she did an amazing job in supporting your feeding choice, breast feeding can be tricky but with the correct support and encouragement can be a truly wonderful experience.

It is unfortunate that you require an appointment and the debrief clinic and I wonder why we didn't manage to provide you with the opportunity, while you were in the ward to discuss the concerns that you had.

If you are happy to continue to wait for the debrief appointment then I will leave it at that but if not and you would prefer to speak with me privately, I can be contacted on the following email.

mailto:nhsg.womensservices@nhs.net

Thanks again for getting in touch and congratulations on the birth of your daughter.

Kind Regards

Liz
