Hi, I have just been for an appointment with the district nurse for a hepatitis A booster which I was advised to get. I booked the appointment 2 weeks ago and attended today. I was informed that they don’t stock it and would have to order it in, I would need another appointment and time off work.

I enquired why it wasn’t available as when I booked the appointment I told reception what it was for, I was somewhat taken aback by the response, which was along the lines of ‘ if I don’t like it I can go to the tropical school of medicine” I politely informed the nurse that I didn’t want to pay to which she said “ if you can afford to go on holiday you can afford to pay for vaccinations”

I find this attitude extremely rude and offensive, she has no idea how hard I work to be able to afford to go on holiday. I left feeling rather frustrated at the process and extremely aggrieved at her comments.

Dear Patient

We have a process in place for the safe administration of vaccines and for stocking them. This is used to ensure that the correct vaccine is given with the most up to date patient and vaccine information. The vaccination forms you have used before for travel vaccines are available on or website or at the reception desk.

I have looked at your concerns and you were offered your alternative places you could obtain a vaccine if you did not want to wait for us to order it in for you which takes usually around 3 days. This is offering patient choice. At no point where you told if you can afford a holiday you can afford to pay for the vaccine.

The nurse did apologise that she could not offer you the vaccine on the day.

If you would like to receive a vaccine please complete the forms and return to us were we would be happy to complete your assessment and offer you the necessary vaccines
